He was 92 years old. Oswaldo was born in Mission. Texas on October 31, 1915. was the fourth of six children Rafael Ramirez die, Ramirez and Maria de Jesus Villarreal Chapa.

Ozzie attended Edinburg Junior College and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 8, 1941, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant following graduation from Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. He married his wife and lifetime partner, Lillian Marguerite Hollingsworth, on March 23, 1943, before departing for his overseas assignment with the First Infantry Division (the Big Red One). His first combat action was as a 1st Lieutenant in charge of a mortar section that landed in the first wave on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion.

He continued to fight with the 1st Infantry until the war's end serving as a combat commander, liaison finally, as the commander of Regimental Division, Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the Sixteenth Infantry Regiment. His talent for drawing maps proved to be an 1 invaluable asset during his military service. He was awarded two Bronze Star Medals for his courageous and heroic actions on D-Day and during The Battle of the Bulge. For eight years following the war, Ozzie served in various capacities for the Veteran's Administration offices located in New Orleans, Opelousas and Lake Charles, Louisiana. During his tenure with the VA, Ozzie enrolled in the evening division of the Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans and received his law degree in June of 1954.

He thereupon embarked I on a career of international employee and labor relations. During his thirty-year legal career, he was employed by Standard Fruit and Steamship' Company, Freeport Sulphur, American Smelting and Refining Company and Texaco, Inc. His most fulfilling professional experience was to work, through Loyola University New Orleans, with the Rev. Louis J. Twomey, S.J., a social justice visionary, to set up the Inter-American Center, the goal of which is "to promote the international scope of the gospel of peace and His professional journey took him literally around the world and included assignments in Honduras, Cuba, Peru and Panama and sojourns into every country in South and Central America, the Caribbean and many nations in Africa.

One of Ozzie's personal and professional ambitions was to improve the cultural relations between the United States and Latin America. To achieve this goal, he was an active participant in numerous organizations including the Pan American Student Forum, the Good Neighbor Commission of Texas and the International Good Neighbor Council. He chronicled his professional life and family history in his autobiographical memoir, "The Fire Within My Journey Through the Twentieth published in 2003. In his own words, Ozzie was an incurable romantic. He attached life with a passion.

He loved history, poetry, music and astronomy. He was a talented portrait artist. was intensely spiritual and viewed life as a spiritual journey as well as a physical one. His actions, whether experiencing joy or adversity, were always guided by his powerful belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ. As a young man his family experienced the devastating impact of the Great Depression, which inevitably imbued him with a life-long affinity for the poor and less fortunate.

He was an active participant in every Catholic parish in which he resided. In his retirement, he volunteered much of his time to bringing the Rosary to prison inmates. Ossie was the father of seven children, the grandfather of twelve, and the great-grandfather of fourteen. He loved his family without reservation and dedicated his life to their needs. Growing up in the Ramirez family was all about faith, family and fun.

From the jungles of Honduras to living in Cuba under Fidel, to the Inca ruins in Peru and the tropical paradise of Panama, life was an adventure with an -widening worldview. There were always lots of books to read, wonderful music to listen to and history, literature and politics to be discussed. In his later years in Austin, his home became a gathering place for the entire extended family, where he took joy in nourishing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Underlying it all was a foundation of faith and dedication to fama ily life. His family was the fountain of his greatest joys and the premature death of three of his children brought his greatest sorrows.

Oswaldo is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Lillian Hollingsworth Ramirez; his sons, Paul Roger Ramirez and James Philip Ramirez; and his daughters, Ann Ramirez Moody and Barbara Jane Ramirez. He is also survived by his brother, Jesus Maria Ramirez of Mission, Texas and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughters Margaret Alice Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Ling and by his son, John Richard Ramirez Rammington. Oswaldo was a loving husband, father and friend. We weep at his departure from our midst, but our spirits are lifted in the secure knowledge that he is now with his mother and father, his sisters and brothers, his daughters and son who departed before him and whom he loved so much and missed so greatly, and we are comforted in the assurance that one day we will all be reunited in a heaven of unbounded love and joy and reside in a paradise where there are no tears.
